From 13 July to 4 August 2019, the World Press Photo Exhibition 2019 can be visited at the Nieuwe Kerk Zierikzee. The exhibition displays the winners of the annual photo competition, which means the best photos in visual journalism of 2018.

Some of the images from the World Press Photo competition have become iconic: the naked girl running from a napalm attack in Vietnam; the Buddhist monk setting himself on fire; the lonely demonstrator facing down a row of tanks on Tiananmen Square. Other photographs have established trends and set the standard for styles of press photography.

Talks & Events

During the exhibition we organize an interesting lecture on August 1st by a well-known name from photography. Access to a lecture at Fizi (the movietheatre in Zierikzee) including access to the exhibition is € 8.-.

Open Call

Open Call Zeeland. We offer professional photographers from Zeeland a stage to expose beside the expositition of World Press Photo. Photographers applied and these are the results.

World Press Photo also offers an education package for primary and secondary schools called 'See the story'.

This package can be used for various school subjects such as social studies, history and creative classes. The package forms an ideal combination with a visit to the World Press Photo exhibition in Zierikzee and can be used to introduce pupils and students to the subject of journalism and press photography. It offers the opportunity to explore different aspects of visual communication.

The educational package covers a number of questions relating to the function of the press and the profession of a press photographer and photojournalist, including: "Why do we hear more about certain events, but less about others? And how are press photos taken? Who decides which photos are published? And what makes press freedom so important?”

We offer the following educational resources:

  • Teachers' manual 'See the story'. An educational module compiled by World Press Photo;
  • Workbooks for the students.
